The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
